Escape the summer heat and join us for a morning of birding in the high-elevation forests north of Flagstaff. Little Spring offers excellent habitat for a variety of mountain species, including several sought-after birds that breed in Northern Arizona's mixed conifer forests.

Date: Saturday, June 20, 2026

Time: 7:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Meeting Point: Bashas parking lot (near the hospital)

1000 N Humphreys St, Flagstaff, AZ 86001

Directions: Meet at 7:00 AM in the parking lot in front of Bashas at Beaver Street and Humphreys Street. We will travel approximately 20 miles to the north entrance of Forest Road 151 and continue about 4 miles on a dirt road to reach the birding area.

What to Bring: Binoculars, water, snacks, hat, sunscreen, sturdy footwear, and clothing appropriate for mountain weather. A spotting scope is optional.

About the Location: Located at approximately 8,500 feet elevation, Little Spring is surrounded by beautiful mixed conifer forest and provides habitat for a variety of breeding birds. We will scan the area for Mountain Bluebirds and Olive-sided Flycatchers before taking a short quarter-mile walk to the historic spring.

Target species may include American Goshawk, Mexican Spotted Owl, Red-faced Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler, Clark's Nutcracker, Williamson's Sapsucker, and other forest birds. As with all birding outings, sightings are never guaranteed, but June is an excellent time to explore this productive habitat.

Walking Distance: Approximately ¼ mile on uneven forest terrain.
