Database of Bird and Pollinator friendly plants
Welcome to our database of bird and pollinator-friendly plants native to northern Arizona! It's organized by the type of plant—grass, forb, shrub and tree—and by each plant's elevational range: found only below 6,500 feet (Sedona, the Verde Valley, Winslow), found only above 6,500 feet (Flagstaff, Williams), and found both above and below 6,500 feet. Nurseries likely to have native plants are listed at the end of the database, along with sources of information about butterfly and moth host plants. |

Spread the word that native plants help provide vital resources for birds and insects
Susan Lamb is one special volunteer! She applied for the grant from NAAS for Rylie Rosson to use to fund creation of the bird garden mentioned below at Willow Bend. Then, one year ago, in the summer of 2023, we asked Susan to work on a brochure that our Chapter could use to help guide people as to which plants could be planted at which elevations? Our Chapter covers a large elevational change. Now we have guidance on which plants we can place in our respective bird gardens.
After we'd asked her to do this, for free, we found out from board member, Rick Moore, that Susan is a very accomplished author: 16 books written by Susan Lamb. Susan is just that giving. She did this project because she wanted to help spread the word that birds need native plants. As a chapter, we hadn't really filled this hole in our educational materials and resources that can truly help our members help birds thrive in our own yards.
This is the most valuable way you can help birds, butterflies and bees! Susan loved the project and threw her whole heart into it. So, let's all make good use of these materials from a top expert!
NAAS is honored to be the recipient of Susan's work. Bird watchers thank you for your selfless contribution and guidance in "... countering the ongoing loss of bird and insect habitat." |
Bird Garden funded by NAASWith the support of a grant from the Northern Arizona Audubon Society, NAU intern Rylie Rosson conceived and created a Bird Garden as a new addition to the Habitat Gardens around the Willow Bend Environmental Education Center at Archuleta County Park in Flagstaff. Rylie directed volunteers from the American Conservation Experience in preparing the site by double-digging amendments into the soil. She then led other garden volunteers in planting grasses, forbs, shrubs, and trees and in creating a pebbled pathway and a small fountain. Finally, Rylie set up a bird feeder and with volunteer Norm Lowe, installed a drip irrigation system donated by the City of Flagstaff. One year later, Rylie’s garden is flourishing with a lively host of birds and pollinators! |
