Pinyon Jay Bird Walk, Saturday, October 21st from 8:00 - 10:00 am (or 12:00 pm.)
Plan to meet at the trailhead parking area for Picture Canyon at 8:00 am. You may hike 1.5 miles if you wish to finish by 10:00 am, but plan to hike the entire 3-mile loop for the best chance to hear and see Pinyon Jays (in which case we’ll likely finish around noon, depending on bird activity and trail conditions.)
The walk will be led by Harrison Jones, Southwest avian ecologist for the Institute for Bird Populations (IBP), and he will be assisted by members of Northern Arizona Audubon, including President Kay Hawklee and perhaps other surprise dignitaries.
At the North end of Picture Canyon, we will reach the Pinyon-Juniper woodlands where Pinyon Jays have been seen recently. We'll learn about local plants, birds, and other animals as we listen for their nasal crow-like calls. No experience necessary! Just keep your ears open for their constant calls to each other, or find a sentinel keeping watch from a tree top. Most of the time, you'll hear them before you see them. Hopefully we will do both!”
Feel free to share the event with others and register here: Pinyon Jay bird walk
