Migration Obstacle Course: What it feels like to be a migrating bird. Flagstaff Star Party, Saturday, Sept. 23rd, 6:00-6:45 pm.*
Join Becky Hardy, Northern Arizona Audubon Society’s (NAAS) Education Chair, on Saturday, September 23rd from 6-6:45 p.m. for an experiential youth activity during the Flagstaff Star Party at Buffalo Park.
Stop by the NAAS table to experience how it feels to be a migrating bird negotiating the Bird Migration Obstacle Course. Children will “pretend to be a bird” as they run through the migration gauntlet.
Will they make it to their migration destination? Come find out!
Migrating birds face various obstacles during their migration; many succumbing to injuries from collisions with buildings. These collisions are in large part due to light distraction/pollution, as birds migrate at night. Lights attract and disorient migrating birds, confusing them, making them vulnerable to collisions with buildings. It is estimated that 365-988 million birds die in collisions with buildings annually, according to BirdCast Children running through the course will not only experience these two obstacles, but many others that birds face.
*If you can't make it right at 6:00 p.m., that's okay. We will run through the activity at least three times so that everyone has a chance to experience being a migrating bird. (Appropriate for ages 6 and up.)
Bring warm layers: coats, hat, gloves, etc.
