Every year birders of all experience levels anxiously await the day of the Christmas Bird Count (hint: it's not on Christmas Day). It gives birders, who are enduring a long winter without migrants, something very fun to do... being with other birders on a conservation mission! CBCs are Community Science at its finest and most fun!
Industrious birders spend many hours "scouting" their assigned route so that when the day comes, they waste no time getting to the spots where birds are most likely to be feeding. Super industrious birders, bird their route during "count week" - 3 days before the actual count day and 3 days after count day - and report their findings back to the Compiler.
Backyard bird watchers can count birds coming to your feeders from the comfort of your own home.
There is an opportunity for any and all participants no matter the level. Please contact, Brian Hofstetter, the Flagstaff count Compiler, if you are interested in being included in this year's CBC - brianhofstetter03@gmail.com (All details will be given by Brian, and won't be posted here. You must contact Brian to be included.)
Why we count: "The data collected by observers over the past century allow Audubon researchers, conservation biologists, wildlife agencies and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys such as the Breeding Bird Survey, it provides a picture of how the continent's bird populations have changed in time and space over the past hundred years."
