BIRDING ON (NOT AT) THE VERDE RIVER!!
June 8, 2019 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Northern Arizona Audubon Society, in partnership with Verde River Institute, (VRI) is, once again, offering a simply amazing bird trip. This is a kayak float on the Verde River and is the most exciting bird non-walk you have ever experienced. This trip features a guided kayak trip on more than 2 miles of the beautiful Verde River from the Lower Tapco River Access Point (RAP) to the Tuzigoot Bridge RAP. Our guide is Doug Von Gausig, the Executive Director of VRI who is an expert birder and naturalist as well.
VRI has prepared an excellent visual description of the entire length of the trip. Click here to view it: Lower Tapco to TuziRap.
The birding, as you may well expect for the River in May, will be superb. In addition to Common Black Hawks, Eagles, and raptors you will see above, a great many perching species will be seen along the float since a kayaker will not disturb the birds as much as birders walking on land. This is your chance to be a “stealth birder”.
Please use the links below to learn about the logistics of the trip. DO come prepared to get wet – usually only from the knees down, but upsets happen. This trip does not require expertise with a kayak and the River is not particularly deep or threatening. Treat this as a benign social birding adventure.
Our trip will begin at the Clarkdale Kayak Company. Please click here for a map to that location. You will be shuttled to Lower Tuzirap, the launch point, where you be outfitted and given a kayak. Details regarding what will be provided and what you will need to provide are found by clicking here: What to bring. You will be provided a dry bag. It is unlikely that you will want to use your binoculars during the times you are on the water in your kayak. You will also need to bring a signed liability release for VRI . Click here for: VRI Release Please download and sign it. You will also be required to accept the NAAS (on-line) release as a condition of registration.
This is a NAAS members-only trip. The cost is $45.00 per member and participation is limited to the first 16 people who register here: Kayak Register
